Crop rotation

Growing the same vegetables in the same spot each year can lead to problems. This can increase the risk of pests and diseases in the soil and also deplete the nutrient levels in the soil.
To avoid these problems a crop rotation system system can be used.

The most simple method of crop rotation is to divide your plot into three sections and follow the system illustrated to the right:

As you can see the vegetable are divided into three groups:
Roots, Brassicas and Legumes.

For a smaller garden this rotation method may not be practical, if this is the case just make sure you alternate between crop types each successive year.
Perennial vegetables such as Asparagus will not be included in this crop rotation scheme as they stay in the same location each year.
