Location....
Before building a pond careful forward planning is essential, as mistakes can be expensive and
difficult to rectify later. There are many aspects to consider before sitting a pond.
Safety
Safety is certainly the most important consideration before sitting your pond. Any ponds can be
a potential hazard to children, they should always be supervised around the pond, choosing a
site with all-round visibility would help. Building a raised pond with netting, can also make
the pond safer around children.
It is not a good idea to have a pond located under a tree, as the roots can damage the pond and
the fallen leaves will cause extra maintenance, some leaves can even be poisonous to aquatic life.
Avoid sitting the pond on waterlogged ground, as the upward pressure of the water can cause the
pond liner to bloom, or make concrete ponds crack.
Make sure the pond is not sited over any gas or electric pipes.
Find a location that allows access to all sides of the pond, this will make later maintenance easier.
